Gentle Resolutions

UnknownMidway through January, I find myself feeling a little irritated at all the calls for resolution and change including weight loss, money management and the cleanse hype.   Something almost feels a little abusive about pushing to make major change right after the busy holiday season.  It’s almost certainly a recipe for failure.

Three reasons to hold off on new year resolutions

  1. Most of us are exhausted after the holiday rush.  We may have used up all our willpower being nice to our relatives and resisting rich food and drink.  This is not a good time to ask yourself to exert more willpower.
  2. If you live in a northern climate and are trying to detox, the body will be resistant.  Once the days get longer and warmer, the body/mind will be more naturally inclined to renew itself.
  3. Too much clutter, not enough clarity.  You may be just beginning to get back into a normal routine after a vacation, school break, and a round of holiday festivities.  You may feel fuzzy-headed and out of sorts, and your surroundings might be in a state of disarray.  Better to make change after you get your house back in order, and get rid of the extra holiday adornments, especially the unhealthy food.

 1. Don’t start until you are ready!  Take time to prepare your physical and mental surroundings.  If you are working on diet changes, is your pantry ready?  If it’s personal change you crave, ask yourself, “how do I want to be in the world?”  The answer to this question is probably not found in a 30 day bowel cleanse.

2. Renew your mindfulness practice.  Mindfulness is a healthy, gentle habit, and it is one that helps us recognize other unhealthy habits and creates insight and impetus to change.  Surf our site by using the search button at the  top of the page to find motivation to meditate.

3.  Remember that you are a work in progress, and that change is not a one-shot deal, but a law of nature.  Don’t change, evolve.  Think in terms of moment-to-moment shifting versus sudden and everlasting change.
