Today, don’t let the great get in the way of the good. So often we have such great expectations for ourselves and our loved ones that we forget to see the good.
What does this look like? Not having any peace of mind at all until you have reached a certain status at work. Not appreciating a a spouse or a child because they have not reached some future goal. You can strive for a certain position, or goal, but don’t do it at the expense of present moment contentment.
Here’s today’s letting go exercise – Small expectations
- Enjoy a small personal accomplishment. Look back on the past week and list three small steps you’ve made – no matter how minute – toward a long-term goal.
- Bring this exercise into the hear and now. What small thing did you do this morning or this afternoon that will make tomorrow better. Think small, I mean really small. Did you have a good breakfast? Bring a child to a lesson? Fold some laundry? Appreciate your small efforts.
- Purposely have a simple meal this evening, perhaps using just one bowl. Take twice as long to eat it as it did to prepare it. Light a candle. Use all your senses to enjoy your simple meal.
Having reverence for the small goodnesses in our lives, fuels us to go for the greater goals.
We wish you twenty minutes of mindfulness every day
