Staying Mindful and Healthy on the Road

The holiday season is here, and for many of us, this means travel.  By plane, car or train, it gets us where we want to go but sometimes we’re burnt out by the time we reach our destination. Here are a few tips to keep you healthy and happy on the road:

Plan and prepare: One of the biggest stress factors to travel is the unexpected. Bad weather delays our flight; the airlines lose our luggage. These things we can’t predict but we can put thought into what we’ll pack, confirm our reservations before we leave, make sure we have the appropriate ID on our person and call ahead to check the weather. Minimize stress by mitigating the problems you can before you walk out the door.

Expect delays, plan for them, then let go: Frustration leads to stress and stress can come from an unexpected delay. Even on short trips, pack something to munch on, a book to read and something to drink. You’ll be prepared with a few things to hold you over and help pass the time while you’re waiting.

Keep moving and breathing: On the plane or train, get up when you can and walk to the restroom. In a car, stop at least every 2 hours to move your body. Sitting for extended periods of time can lead to pooling of the blood in the legs, which can create other health problems. Deep breathing is a great way to stay connected to your body and be drawn in less to external stressors. Stay in your own zone as much as you can!

Bring your own food: Traveling wreaks havoc on your digestive system. Rushing to make your connection, weird sleeping habits and keeping long hours can be enough to send you into a state of intestinal upset. As much as you can, bring your own food. Nature bars, nuts, apple sauce, dry soups that just need added water, dried fruit and your own tea bags not only help your system stay calm but can also give you a sense of “home” even when you’re on the road.

 Other comforts of home: Food isn’t the only item that can help you create a home away from home.  Try packing some tissues infused with your favorite essential oil.  This will encourage you to breathe and relax.  Gone are the glamorous days of travel when you wore your sunday best.  Stay comfortable for the duration of your trip by packing  your favorite old comfy sweater or shall and keep it in your carry on so that that you can have easy access.

Take time to exercise: Exercising on the road has never been easier. Pack a yoga mat, your running shoes or at a minimum, loose fitting clothing. Bring a favorite exercise DVD or a fun song list as background for a walk, run or some stretching. Even just 15 minutes will feel great!

Try traveling meditation: Being in a new place is exciting and stressful all at once. Try to close your eyes for a few minutes, take a few deep breaths and connect to your body. You’ll immediately feel refreshed.
